Construction of Thane Coastal Road-1 is progressing steadily, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) reporting more than 40% completion on the 13.45-km corridor within 14 months of work beginning.
The project has advanced across several key components, including foundation work, pier construction, pier-cap casting and installation of I-girders. As of September 2, around 40% of the overall development had been completed.
Major Structural Work Underway
Of the 426 working piles planned for the project, construction has been completed on 332, taking piling progress to approximately 77%. Work on the piers has also reached around 65%, with 277 of the 426 structures completed.
A total of 460 pier caps have been cast as part of the elevated road structure.
I-girder installation has also gained momentum. So far, 501 of the planned 1,632 I-girders have been erected, accounting for roughly 30% of the total requirement. Construction teams have also completed 13 deck-slab spans.
Six-Lane Road to Ease Ghodbunder Pressure
Thane Coastal Road-1 is being built as a 13.45-km, six-lane, access-controlled greenfield corridor between Kharegaon Toll Naka and Gaimukh.
The project is designed to provide an alternative route for freight and regional traffic, easing congestion on Ghodbunder Road and improving connectivity towards the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, NH-160 and Gaimukh.
A large portion of the corridor will be elevated, including an 8.11-km elevated section and a 240-metre creek bridge. This approach is also intended to minimise the impact on ecologically sensitive mangrove areas.
Project authorities have said the road will be the first greenfield road project in India to adopt a single-pile, single-pier system using monopile foundations on land.
A 40-45-metre-wide Development Plan road has also been reserved, which is expected to help separate local movement from inter-city traffic using Ghodbunder Road.
Wider Connectivity Network
At Gaimukh, the corridor will connect with the proposed Gaimukh-Fountain Hotel Tunnel, creating a faster road connection between Thane and Bhayander.
Together, the projects could improve freight movement towards Wadhawan Port, JNPT, South Maharashtra and Karnataka, while reducing pressure on existing routes.
Thane Coastal Road-1 is also planned to integrate with future projects including the Thane Ring Metro, Thane Coastal Road-2, Saket-Amane Elevated Corridor and Kasarvadavali-Kharbhav Road.
Officials said these projects, when integrated, are expected to become an important part of Thane’s future transportation network, improving both daily urban mobility and long-distance freight movement.
