Residents of Belapur’s Sector 30-31 have sought an explanation from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) over ongoing work involving the laying of gravel along the bottom of a natural drain.
The Sector 30-31 Residents Association submitted a written representation to the NMMC commissioner on September 11, asking the civic body to clarify why the work is being carried out, who is executing it and whether the activity has received the required permissions.
Residents said they were particularly concerned because the work is taking place during the monsoon, when natural drains are important for carrying away rainwater and preventing local waterlogging.
Residents Seek Clarity on Agency and Permissions
According to the association, residents had earlier been informed by the city engineer that the NMMC was not carrying out the work. This has led to questions over whether another agency or contractor is undertaking the activity.
The residents have therefore asked the civic administration to identify the agency responsible and confirm whether it has obtained the necessary approvals from the municipal corporation.
They have also sought details about the purpose of placing gravel inside the drain and whether the work forms part of any larger infrastructure or drainage project.
Concerns Over Stormwater Flow
The residents’ primary concern is the possible effect of the work on the drain’s water-carrying capacity.
Natural drainage channels play an important role in directing stormwater during periods of heavy rainfall. Residents fear that any alteration to the base or profile of the drain could potentially affect the movement of rainwater, particularly during intense monsoon showers.
The association has therefore requested a physical inspection of the site by NMMC officials to assess whether the gravel work could interfere with the existing drainage system.
Demand for On-Site Inspection
Residents have asked the civic body to determine the exact nature and purpose of the work before it progresses further. They want officials to inspect the site, verify the permissions involved and assess the possible impact on stormwater movement.
The association said an official assessment would help clarify whether the activity is required, who authorised it and whether any modifications are needed to protect the drain’s functioning.
For residents of Sector 30-31, the issue is particularly significant during the monsoon, when the natural drain forms part of the area’s stormwater management network.
The matter now rests with the NMMC, which has been asked to provide details about the work and examine its potential effect on drainage capacity.
A site inspection and clarification from the civic administration could help address residents’ concerns while ensuring that any work carried out within the natural drainage channel does not compromise stormwater flow or local flood management.
