Construction of the Shunya Iconic Bridge on Mumbai Metro Line 2B has entered a significant stage, with work on the main deck progressing across multiple sections of the structure.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) recently shared an update highlighting progress on the deck, which will eventually carry Metro Line 2B across the Vakola Nalla. The authority described the work as “one of the most important parts of the Shunya Bridge-its main deck.”
Several portions of the deck are now being constructed simultaneously, gradually taking the elevated bridge closer to its final structural form.
Deck Construction Moves Ahead
The deck superstructure forms the horizontal section of the bridge designed to support Metro operations. Its construction involves reinforcing steel, formwork, embedded components and concrete casting.
According to MMRDA, the work is being executed with detailed quality and dimensional checks at different stages to ensure structural accuracy. Recent visuals released by the authority show concrete work advancing across various sections.
MMRDA noted that different parts of the deck are “now progressing together”, indicating that construction is moving forward on multiple fronts rather than sequentially.
Distinctive Cable-Stayed Structure
The Shunya Bridge is being developed not only as a critical part of the Metro alignment but also as a visually distinctive structure.
MMRDA said the bridge combines complex engineering requirements with a “distinctive visual identity” and is expected to become one of the prominent architectural elements of Metro Line 2B.
Located at Vakola Nalla, the bridge will extend for approximately 130 metres. It consists of an 80-metre main span crossing the nalla and a 50-metre anchor span.
The cable-stayed design is intended to provide the required structural support while giving the bridge its distinctive appearance.
Metro Line 2B Expansion Continues
Metro Line 2B is a 23.643-km elevated corridor connecting DN Nagar and Mandale. The project is intended to strengthen east-west connectivity and provide links with Mumbai’s wider Metro and suburban railway networks.
The first phase, covering approximately 5.5 km between Mandale and Diamond Garden-Chembur, became operational in April 2026. A further 0.29-km extension to Chembur station opened on August 13, 2026.
Construction is continuing on the remaining sections of the corridor, including associated bridges and stations. The latest progress on the Shunya Iconic Bridge represents another step in the development of the elevated alignment.
Once completed, the bridge will form an important component of Metro Line 2B while adding a prominent piece of infrastructure to Mumbai’s evolving urban transport network.
The ongoing deck construction is therefore significant not only for the bridge itself but also for the broader completion of a Metro corridor intended to improve connectivity across Mumbai’s eastern and western neighbourhoods.
