A 23-year-old pedestrian was injured in Kashimira, Mira Bhayandar, after a cement slab from an under-construction section of Mumbai Metro Line 9 fell on his head on Sunday. The incident comes days after two separate accidents were reported at other Mumbai Metro construction sites.
The injured man, identified as Shadab, was walking beneath the elevated Metro corridor when the slab reportedly fell on him, causing a head injury.
Local residents said Shadab remained on the roadside for nearly an hour after the incident. They claimed that parked vehicles made it difficult for passing motorists to notice him. He was eventually taken to Wockhardt Hospital in an autorickshaw for medical treatment.
A police officer from the Kashimira police station confirmed the incident and said Shadab is undergoing treatment. As his condition currently does not allow him to provide a statement, police are expected to record his version once he is medically fit. An FIR is likely to be registered on Monday.
Safety Concerns Raised at Construction Site
The incident has triggered fresh concerns over safety arrangements around the Metro construction corridor.
Sandeep Rane, an MNS leader from Mira Bhayandar, said Shadab operates a mattress shop in Kashimira and was walking below the Metro structure and a parallel double-decker flyover when the cement slab struck him.
“He has sustained a fracture on his head. Shadab’s father is out of Mumbai, and is returning now after he was informed of the incident. There was no barricading beneath the construction site to prevent people from walking below. This is clear negligence and a lack of consideration for safety by the contractor J Kumar. Just a few weeks ago, some stones had fallen onto the road below along this metro line, almost falling on a school van,” Rane said.
Third Metro-Related Accident in 10 Days
The latest incident is being reported as the third accident involving Mumbai Metro construction or infrastructure in a span of 10 days.
Metro Line 9 currently operates up to Kashigaon, with the remaining three stations expected to become operational by December. The corridor connects Dahisar with Mira Bhayandar and is intended to improve public transport access between the western suburbs and the extended Mira-Bhayandar region.
The latest accident has renewed attention on safety measures around active construction zones, particularly where pedestrians continue to move beneath elevated structures. Police and other authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the falling slab and the safety arrangements at the site.
