Residents of Navi Mumbai have received temporary relief from the 10% water cut imposed across the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) area. The civic administration has decided to suspend the reduction after reviewing the available storage at Morbe Dam, along with current water consumption and the city’s requirements.
The 10% cut had been introduced in May 2026 as part of water conservation measures. The decision was influenced by forecasts of below-normal monsoon rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department estimating seasonal rainfall at around 92–94% of the average and highlighting possible effects associated with El Nino and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).
Construction Water Connections to Resume
With the water reduction now suspended, water connections for ongoing construction projects will also be restored. However, the civic body has made it clear that water supplied through these connections must be used only for drinking purposes by workers and staff.
If potable water is found being diverted for construction or any other non-drinking activity, the connection will be disconnected immediately and penal action may follow.
Swimming pools have also been instructed to adopt water recycling and reuse measures and minimise wastage to conserve available resources.
Morbe Dam Storage Compared With Last Year
The administration’s decision has been based partly on a comparison of reservoir levels.
On September 16, 2025, Morbe Dam had reached 100% total storage, with usable storage at 84.40%. On September 16, 2026, total storage stood at 91.03%, while usable storage was around 75%.
Although the reservoir contains less water than at the same point last year, the civic administration has assessed the current position as satisfactory enough to suspend the reduction and ease the inconvenience faced by residents.
Fresh Review Scheduled for November
A detailed assessment of the dam’s usable water storage is scheduled for November 30, 2026. Based on the reservoir position at that time, actual consumption and projected demand until the next monsoon, the NMMC will decide whether the existing supply pattern can continue or whether restrictions need to be introduced again.
The administration has also appealed to residents to continue conserving water and avoid unnecessary consumption.
The temporary suspension therefore provides relief to households while keeping the city’s water management under review. The November assessment will be an important milestone in determining Navi Mumbai’s water-supply strategy for the months ahead.
