The Siddheshwar Nagar cluster redevelopment project in Thane is set to enter the construction phase, with the foundation stone ceremony scheduled in Khopat and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde set to inaugurate the project. The initiative follows the earlier redevelopment efforts at Kisan Nagar and is aimed at creating planned housing and infrastructure across the central Thane neighbourhood.
The cluster redevelopment model brings together dilapidated buildings, chawls, slums and unauthorised structures within larger planning areas instead of redeveloping individual properties separately. The objective is to provide safer housing, improved civic infrastructure and better-organised amenities to residents.
To accelerate the programme, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has established a Cluster Development Company, which has received approval from the municipal general body. The administration had earlier explored implementing the scheme through government agencies such as CIDCO and Mahapreet when private developers showed limited interest.
The state government subsequently announced steps to speed up execution, including transferring the project from Mahapreet to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and giving cluster schemes priority public-housing project status. The government also directed the immediate transfer of 60.72 hectares of MIDC land for rehabilitation purposes.
50 Urban Regeneration Plans
The Thane civic administration has prepared 50 Urban Regeneration Plans (URPs) covering approximately 1,500 hectares. Of these, 12 plans have already received approval. The approved areas include Lokmanya Nagar, Kopri, Kisan Nagar, Rabodi, Tekdi Bangla, Hazuri, Azadnagar, Gokulnagar, Mahagiri, Charai, Siddheshwar and the Station area.
These projects are being taken forward in phases, with the Siddheshwar Nagar scheme representing another significant step in the city’s broader cluster redevelopment programme.
Foundation Ceremony in Khopat
The Bhoomi Pujan ceremony for the Siddheshwar Nagar project is being held at State Transport Workshop No. 2 in Khopat, in the presence of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and under the chairmanship of Thane Mayor Sharmila Pimpolkar.
For residents who have been awaiting redevelopment, the ceremony marks a transition from planning and approvals towards actual implementation.
The project is expected to reshape the Siddheshwar Nagar area through collective redevelopment, with the emphasis on new housing, upgraded infrastructure and planned civic amenities. Its progress will also provide an indication of how Thane’s wider cluster redevelopment programme moves from approved plans to on-ground construction.
