Families of the two workers who died in the Bhakti Park accident in Mumbai will receive financial assistance and compensation totalling Rs 84.20 lakh, with each family eligible for support from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as well as statutory compensation.
The MMRDA will provide Rs 26 lakh directly to each family. This includes Rs 1 lakh towards immediate funeral expenses, Rs 10 lakh to the wife of each deceased worker and another Rs 15 lakh through cheques that have already been prepared.
The remaining compensation will be provided under applicable labour provisions. The family of the 37-year-old worker is expected to receive approximately Rs 15.10 lakh in statutory compensation, taking the overall assistance for the family to Rs 41.10 lakh. The family of the 35-year-old worker is expected to receive around Rs 17.10 lakh, bringing its total financial assistance and compensation to Rs 43.10 lakh.
The additional Rs 15 lakh cheques will be handed over once the MMRDA receives the required details concerning the deceased workers’ children. The authority has also said it will extend legal assistance to the families to help them pursue their statutory compensation claims through the Labour Department.
The accident took place at around 7.30pm on September 12, when two workers reportedly fell while moving from the first floor to the ground floor after an iron staging structure gave way.
According to the FIR registered at Wadala TT police station, the workers were identified as Nadheej, 33, and Saqim, 37. Both were taken to Sion Hospital following the incident. One was declared dead before admission, while the other succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Police have named subcontractor Tariq-ul-Islam as the accused in the case, alleging negligence and inadequate safety measures for workers. A case has been registered under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is underway.
