From faster cross-city travel to new housing and emerging urban centres, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has laid out a sweeping infrastructure roadmap aimed at reshaping Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The government’s ‘Mumbai in Minutes’ vision will focus on connecting key parts of the MMR through tunnels, Metro corridors, highways and major transport links.
The Thane-Borivali twin tunnel is expected to strengthen east-west connectivity, while Atal Setu, Mumbai Metro expansion and Navi Mumbai International Airport will further improve regional links.
‘Third Mumbai’ In Focus
A major part of the roadmap is the development of ‘Third Mumbai’ around the Atal Setu corridor. The new growth zone is being planned around housing, jobs, commercial activity, roads, public transport and logistics.
The government has also set a target of 35 lakh homes by 2030, with a focus on affordable housing.
With Navi Mumbai emerging as an aviation and logistics hub and Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli developing as new growth centres, the plan aims to spread Mumbai’s future growth across the wider MMR.
Shinde also highlighted plans for more open spaces, flood management, sewage treatment, public transport expansion and mangrove conservation as part of Mumbai’s long-term infrastructure strategy.
