Worli Flyover & Subway Linking Nehru Science Centre, Planetarium To Open By January 2027

Mumbai’s BMC is targeting January 31, 2027, to complete a new flyover and subway that will provide a direct connection between E Moses Road and Annie Besant Road in Worli, potentially cutting travel time between the Nehru Science Centre and Nehru Planetarium by up to 15 minutes.

The Rs 285.61-crore project is being developed over the Nehru Science Centre drain and is intended to remove the existing nearly 2-km detour through the busy Worli Naka junction. Although the two institutions are located close to each other, motorists currently need to pass through Worli Naka, where E Moses Road intersects with Annie Besant Road, to travel between the locations.

The civic body had prepared the project in 2022 to address the connectivity gap. On Thursday, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the construction site and instructed officials to accelerate the remaining work to meet the January 31 deadline.

According to civic authorities, piling for the main flyover has been completed in the Nehru Science Centre and Jijamata Nagar sections. The piles have a diameter of 1,200 mm, while work on the pile caps is currently progressing.

“Work of construction of portal beams and girders is going on at the project site as well as at the production centre. Furthermore, out of 18 girder spans, 17 girder spans have been completed. Work on the remaining one girder span is in progress,” officials said.

Construction of slabs and concreting of the spans are also underway. Bangar has directed the project team to deploy additional workers, machinery and other resources to increase the pace of construction.

The planned flyover will measure 571 metres in length and have an overall width of 18.3 metres. Once completed, the infrastructure is expected to create a more direct road connection between the two major roads and improve movement around the Worli Naka area.

The project is part of the BMC’s efforts to address local traffic bottlenecks and improve connectivity across Mumbai’s increasingly congested road network. Its January 2027 target will depend on the pace of the remaining structural and finishing works.
