The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing to launch a fresh tender worth around ₹6,000 crore for concrete road works across Mumbai, with construction expected to begin in December or January, according to civic officials.
The proposed package is being planned as the next phase of the city’s road concretisation programme. Estimates are currently being prepared, with the new tender also expected to absorb unfinished works from earlier contracts awarded during 2023-24.
Officials said portions of the earlier assignments are being withdrawn from contractors who have either failed to complete the work or have progressed at a slower pace than expected. The scope allotted to Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC), which originally received a contract worth Rs 1,600 crore, has been reduced by Rs 300 crore.
Similarly, the work assigned to Eagle Infra India has been scaled down by Rs 85 crore. The unfinished portions of these contracts are expected to be incorporated into the upcoming tender package.
A BMC road department official said, “There have been complaints that the pace of the work has been slow by some contractors, hence we have decided to reduce the scope of work and accordingly include it as a part of the new tender which will be floated for the next phase of road concretisation works.”
The civic body had awarded five major contracts worth a combined Rs 6,080 crore in 2023 for its large-scale cement concrete road programme. The project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The contracts were distributed among NCC, Eagle Infra India, Roadways Solutions India Infra, Megha Engineering & Infrastructures and Dineshchandra Agrawal Infracon.
The upcoming tender is expected to have a broader scope, including roads measuring nine metres or less in width. This would bring smaller roads into the next stage of Mumbai’s concretisation programme.
The BMC is currently working on detailed cost estimates and project requirements before floating the tender. If the proposed schedule is maintained, work under the new package could commence by December 2026 or January 2027.
The move comes as the civic administration seeks to redistribute incomplete road works and accelerate the implementation of its wider road concretisation programme across Mumbai.
