Bandra railway station is set to receive an eighth platform on its eastern side as part of the ongoing effort to accelerate construction of the sixth railway line between Mumbai Central and Borivali. The additional infrastructure is expected to strengthen suburban train capacity on Mumbai’s Western Railway corridor.
According to a Mumbai news report, Platform 8 will be constructed on land formerly occupied by Garib Nagar. A railway official said the new platform would improve passenger convenience while creating greater operational scope for additional local train services.
Bandra currently has seven platforms. Platforms 1 to 4 handle Main Line suburban services, while Platforms 5 to 7 cater to Harbour Line trains. The proposed addition will take the station’s total platform count to eight.
The work is closely linked to the sixth-line project, particularly the Dadar-Khar Road section, where railway infrastructure interfaces with the existing Bandra-Khar flyover and station access facilities. Work associated with the existing Platform 7 and proposed Platform 8 is progressing towards the tendering stage, including preparations for a service-building tender.
However, construction remains dependent on the relocation of around 100 project-affected residents by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The Bombay High Court issued directions concerning the affected residents on April 29, 2026. Until rehabilitation is completed, some portions of the station-related work are expected to remain constrained.
The Bandra-Khar flyover will also be rebuilt under a revised structural and design plan, which is scheduled for completion by October 31, 2026. To minimise disruption to Harbour Line operations, Western Railway plans to use precast box segments for the flyover’s northern ramp.
The sixth-line project is being executed in phases. The Mumbai Central-Dadar stretch is targeted for completion by March 2029, while Dadar-Khar Road is scheduled for December 2029.
The Bandra platform is part of a broader Western Railway expansion plan that also includes additional platforms at Virar, Borivali and Andheri.
