BMC Plans Wider Use Of AI To Modernise Mumbai’s Sewerage Pumping Network

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking to expand the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning and predictive analytics to improve the efficiency and reliability of Mumbai’s sewerage pumping infrastructure.

BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Dr Vipin Sharma issued the direction during a visit to the AI- and machine learning-enabled Information & Analytics Centre at the influent pumping station in Bandra on Wednesday.

During the visit, Sharma assessed the centre’s monitoring systems, operational data integration and predictive analytics capabilities. He also reviewed how the technology is being used to identify potential problems early and support data-based decisions for the city’s sewerage network.

The centre has been established by the BMC’s Sewerage Operations Department with support from Metro Waste Management and iPUMPNET. Its AI/ML-based system combines operational information to generate predictive insights, provide early warnings and assist officials in managing pumping station operations more effectively.

Chief Engineer (Sewerage Operations) Prachiti Desai and other senior officials were present during Sharma’s inspection.

After reviewing the system, Sharma expressed satisfaction with its functioning and called for its capabilities to be used more extensively across sewerage operations. He stressed that technology adoption should result in tangible improvements rather than remain limited to monitoring and data collection.

“Technology must translate into timely, data-driven decisions and measurable improvements in operations. AI, Machine Learning and predictive analytics should be extensively deployed to optimise sewerage pumping stations and strengthen the reliability of Mumbai’s sewerage infrastructure,” Dr. Sharma directed officials, contractors and technology partners.

He also underlined the civic body’s intention to expand the application of advanced technology and predictive tools across Mumbai and its suburbs. The objective is to make the sewerage network more responsive while improving operational reliability and efficiency.

The move comes as Mumbai continues to strengthen its civic infrastructure through technology-led monitoring and management systems. By using real-time operational data and predictive analysis, the BMC aims to identify emerging issues earlier, improve maintenance planning and minimise disruptions across its sewerage pumping network.

The initiative could eventually provide the civic body with a broader technology-driven framework for managing critical urban infrastructure and making faster, evidence-based operational decisions.
