BMC Clears 180 Encroachments Along Goregaon-Mulund Link Road Route In Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has demolished 180 structures obstructing the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project at Khindipada-Sonapur in Mumbai’s S ward, clearing almost the entire affected stretch within the ward’s boundaries.

The demolition drive, carried out on Friday, October 9, is expected to facilitate road widening and subsequent construction work on the major east-west connectivity project. The civic body has also confirmed that 108 eligible project-affected residents have been rehabilitated.

Stretching 12.20 km, the GMLR is being developed in four phases and includes road construction, an underground tunnel and flyovers. Once completed, the infrastructure corridor is expected to improve connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs and help reduce traffic congestion.

Debris Removal Underway

Following the removal of nearly all structures obstructing the proposed alignment in S ward, the BMC has begun clearing the resulting demolition debris. The work is intended to make the site available for road widening and the next stage of construction.

According to the civic body, debris clearance is progressing to ensure that the required area can be handed over for further work within the stipulated timeframe.

The rehabilitation of 108 eligible project-affected residents forms part of the ongoing process to clear the route for the infrastructure project.

Extensive Deployment for Demolition Drive

The operation was conducted under the supervision of the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone VI) and led by the Assistant Commissioner of S ward.

To execute the demolition efficiently, the BMC deployed more than 30 engineers and 100 civic employees. The operation was supported by four Poklen excavators, four JCB machines and 10 dumpers to remove the structures and transport debris.

Around 90 police personnel were also stationed at the site to support the operation.

With the majority of obstructions removed in S ward, the focus has now shifted to clearing debris and preparing the alignment for the next phase of construction. The progress is expected to help advance road-widening work along this section of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, a key component of Mumbai’s east-west transport network.
