ReNew Wind Energy Private Limited, a subsidiary of clean energy company ReNew, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to develop an integrated green data centre park involving a proposed investment of Rs 70,000 crore.
The planned facility will have a capacity of 750 megawatts (MW) and is proposed across locations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Panvel, Khalapur, Taloja and Bhokharpada in Navi Mumbai. According to the company, commercial operations are expected to begin in 2028.
Under the agreement, the Maharashtra government will facilitate the necessary permissions, registrations, approvals, clearances and fiscal incentives, subject to applicable policies and regulations. The initiative is expected to strengthen the region’s position as a destination for large-scale digital infrastructure investment.
Renewable Energy at the Centre
A key feature of the proposed development is its emphasis on clean electricity. ReNew stated that the integrated green data centre park will be required to source 51 per cent of its power from green energy to operate its facilities.
The project also envisages dedicated electricity infrastructure to support its planned capacity. This includes facilitating two incoming power feeders from independent sources to the park’s substation, helping establish a reliable supply arrangement for data centre operations.
ReNew described the proposed investment as an important step in its expansion into the data centre sector, with renewable energy integration forming a central component of the project.
Supporting Maharashtra’s Economic Ambitions
The proposed development aligns with Maharashtra’s ambition to become a USD 1 trillion economy by 2030. It also reflects the state’s efforts to attract investment into high-growth industries, including data centres, semiconductors and clean energy.
The combination of large-scale digital infrastructure and renewable power is expected to support growing demand for data storage and computing capacity while advancing the use of cleaner energy sources.
If implemented as planned, the Rs 70,000 crore project would represent a major proposed investment in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, bringing together data centre capacity, dedicated power infrastructure and green energy requirements. The next stages will depend on the development process and applicable approvals.
