Thane District Unveils Rs 400 Crore Plan To Modernise Schools, Health Centres & Public Amenities

The Thane district administration has drawn up a development programme worth approximately Rs 400 crore to upgrade educational institutions, primary healthcare facilities and civic infrastructure. The proposal includes around Rs 300 crore for improving school facilities and Rs 100 crore for strengthening primary health centres across the district.

The plan was reviewed at a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (Disha Committee) held at the Thane Collector’s Office on Friday. It follows directions issued by committee chairman and MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde.

Schools to Receive Modern Facilities

The education component aims to improve infrastructure in Zilla Parishad schools, municipal schools and other institutions across the district. Proposed upgrades include digital learning systems, internet connectivity, modern classrooms, separate toilets for boys and girls, clean drinking water and improved kitchens.

Under the Saksham Shala Abhiyan, schools will be developed into smart learning centres based on their individual requirements. Planned additions include solar power systems, rainwater harvesting facilities, student restrooms and educational murals.

Dr. Shinde has also stressed the need for well-equipped kitchens to ensure nutritious meals under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM Poshan) scheme. The administration intends to involve experienced teachers from government and private institutions to improve educational standards. Schools will undergo annual assessments, with improvements planned according to the findings.

Healthcare Infrastructure to Be Strengthened

Around ₹100 crore has been earmarked to improve primary health centres. The objective is to equip these facilities to provide essential examinations, treatment and basic medical services under one roof.

The proposed upgrades will focus on infrastructure, cleanliness, patient amenities and the quality of healthcare services available to residents.

Better Public Spaces and Civic Amenities

The wider development programme also covers urban beautification, improved lighting, landscaping of lakes and parks, and modern public toilets. Plans include exercise facilities, cycling tracks, children’s play areas, modern gymnasiums, libraries and study rooms.

Special attention will also be given to improving basic amenities in Dalit settlements and slum areas, alongside initiatives supporting women’s empowerment.

The administration plans to mobilise funding through Zilla Parishads, municipal corporations and municipal councils to implement the projects in a phased and coordinated manner.
