Mumbai’s Borivali suburb is set to receive a new cable-stayed flyover designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity between the Western Express Highway and Link Road. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is executing the Rs 341.59-crore project, which will allow motorists to avoid three busy junctions along Dattapada Road.
The proposed bridge is also expected to improve access to two major upcoming infrastructure projects: the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (North) and the Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel.
A direct route to cut travel time
At present, commuters travelling between Borivali West and the Western Express Highway near Dattapada Road must pass through Rajendra Nagar Junction, Dattapada Cross Road Junction and the T-junction near Suswagat Hotel. These intersections frequently add to travel delays.
The new flyover will provide a more direct connection from the Western Express Highway to the General Cariappa Rail Over Bridge (ROB). From there, motorists will be able to connect with the Kora Kendra flyover and Link Road. The civic body has also proposed connections to the Coastal Road extension and the twin-tunnel corridor near Magathane Bus Depot.
Project details and timeline
The bridge will begin at the eastern approach road of the General Cariappa ROB and descend approximately 70 metres before the Western Express Highway in Borivali East.
The alignment will stretch for 880 metres, with its width varying between 15.3 metres and 21.5 metres. The cable-stayed section will account for 500 metres of the structure. The project is scheduled for completion by May 2028.
Providing an update on construction, a senior BMC official told The Indian Express, “Work on the project is progressing fast, with foundation and substructure work nearly 70 per cent completed, and work on the superstructure currently underway,”
Explaining the expected benefits, the official added, “The new link will enable commuters to bypass considerable traffic on Dattapada Road by providing direct, seamless connectivity from Western Express Highway to Link Road. This will not only save commuters’ time but also reduce fuel consumption and aid in reducing pollution,”
Once completed, the bridge is expected to streamline traffic movement, shorten journeys and improve access across Mumbai’s northern suburbs.
