Vidyavihar Flyover Nears Public Opening As BMC Wraps Up Final Installation Work

The new flyover near Vidyavihar railway station in Mumbai is approaching completion, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) finishing major construction activities and undertaking the final installation of noise barriers. The civic authority is accelerating the remaining work, with the facility expected to open to traffic on October 10.

The two-lane structure provides a direct connection between Ramchandra Chemburkar Road on the eastern side of the railway station and Lal Bahadur Shastri Road on the western side. Stretching 650 metres, the flyover includes a 100-metre section passing over the railway tracks, along with approach roads measuring 220 metres on the eastern side and 330 metres on the western side.

The project also incorporates access linking the flyover to the footpaths at Vidyavihar railway station. Supporting infrastructure upgrades include the reconstruction of ticket booking offices, the station master’s office and staircases on both sides of the station. In addition, a pedestrian pathway inside the railway premises has been connected to the sub-road through a staircase, improving access for commuters.

According to the BMC, road construction, painting and street lighting have been completed. Noise barriers, designed to minimise traffic-related disturbance for residents in the surrounding neighbourhoods, are now being installed as part of the final phase of the project.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the flyover and nearby roads on Thursday alongside traffic police officials. During the visit, he assessed traffic movement, adjoining junctions, signal arrangements, vehicle flow and pedestrian safety.

Bangar instructed civic officials and the traffic police to coordinate preparations ahead of the flyover’s opening. The measures include installing directional signboards and barricades, regulating vehicle movement wherever required and developing a joint traffic management plan.

Authorities have been asked to focus particularly on the approach roads, where congestion could increase during peak commuting hours. The coordinated arrangements are intended to ensure smoother traffic movement and safer passage for pedestrians once the flyover becomes operational.
