Alstom Unveils First Driverless Metro Trainset For Mumbai Metro Lines 4 & 4A

Alstom has unveiled the first Metropolis driverless metro trainset for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A at its manufacturing facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. Developed in 14 months, the milestone marks progress in Mumbai’s expanding metro network and highlights India’s growing capabilities in advanced railway manufacturing.

The unveiling was attended by representatives of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which is executing the Integrated Systems Package for the two corridors. Alstom is supplying 39 driverless trainsets, along with signalling solutions, depot equipment and maintenance services, for the project being implemented under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Local Manufacturing Supports Metro Expansion

The trainset was designed in Bengaluru and manufactured at Sri City. Its propulsion systems are sourced from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, while its bogies come from Savli, Gujarat. This multi-location production model brings together several Indian manufacturing centres and supports the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

The trains have a design speed of 90 kmph and an operational speed of 80 kmph. Passenger features include airflow-based cooling, wheelchair accessibility and dedicated bicycle racks, which Alstom describes as a first for its trains in India. The bicycle provision is intended to facilitate multimodal journeys by connecting metro travel with cycling.

The trainsets sport a green-and-blue exterior inspired by MMRDA’s vision of a connected and environmentally responsible Mumbai. Alstom has also incorporated its Eco-design approach, considering environmental performance and fire-safety requirements in material selection.

Alstom and L&T Emphasise Collaboration

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, said the unveiling was an important achievement for the company and its contribution to Mumbai’s urban transport development.

“Our long-standing partnership with Mumbai’s metro network continues to grow and we are proud to consistently deliver next generation rail solutions for the urban metro network in the city. The Mumbai Line 4 & 4A project also establishes our collaboration with L&T to support MMRDA in its metro network expansion, today is a proud moment for us at Alstom to be showcasing the first trainset at a record time,”

S. Ramkumar, Senior Vice President and Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, highlighted the partnership’s combination of engineering, procurement and construction capabilities with Alstom’s rolling stock expertise. He also noted L&T’s role in the power supply and track systems packages.

Urban Infra Group MD and CEO Mamta Shah said the milestone reflected India’s growing expertise in metro manufacturing and railway systems integration. She emphasised the importance of timely delivery, passenger comfort, accessibility and reliable system integration.

Expanding Mumbai’s Metro Network

Alstom has also supplied trainsets and signalling systems for Mumbai Metro’s operational Aqua Line and provides signalling and telecommunications solutions for Lines 2 and 7, alongside signalling systems for Lines 7A and 9.

The delivery of all 39 trainsets and associated systems will be an important step towards preparing Lines 4 and 4A for passenger services, supporting improved connectivity and more sustainable travel across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
