JVPD Flyover Set To Transform Western Suburb Commutes, BMC Targets December 2027 Opening

Mumbai’s western suburbs could see a significant improvement in road connectivity, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) targeting December 31, 2027, to open the Juhu-Vile Parle Development Scheme (JVPD) flyover.

Spanning 1.75 km, the elevated corridor will connect the end of the C.D. Barfiwala flyover in Andheri West with the Juhu-Versova Link Road. Once operational, it is expected to cut peak-hour travel time along the route from around 45 minutes to approximately 20 minutes.

Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), recently inspected the construction site and reviewed progress, traffic arrangements and project deadlines. He instructed officials to accelerate the remaining work and complete the flyover ahead of the existing March 31, 2028, deadline.

Five Junctions to Be Bypassed

The flyover is designed to bypass five major traffic junctions, improving movement between Andheri West, Juhu, Vile Parle West and Versova. It is also expected to strengthen access to the proposed Versova-Bandra Sea Link and the Mumbai Coastal Road (North).

The 15.10-metre-wide structure will feature two lanes in each direction, helping vehicles move more efficiently through busy stretches of the western suburbs.

Engineering Challenges Shape Construction

Construction has involved several technical hurdles, including modifications to the original alignment, shifting underground utilities and coordinating work with Mumbai Metro Line 2B.

The project requires relocating approximately 400 metres of water pipelines and moving a 1,200-mm sewer line through microtunnelling. Another 300-mm sewer line is also being shifted and relaid.

Further works include installing girders beneath a metro station using specialised methods, constructing a 72-metre arch bridge at 90 Feet Junction and developing long-span sections near Juhu Circle with fewer supporting pillars.

BMC Pushes for Faster Execution

To speed up construction, the civic administration has divided the work into three phases, with dedicated teams and parallel execution planned wherever feasible.

The flyover is expected to improve traffic flow across the western suburbs, reduce delays at busy junctions and provide smoother connections to major roads. If completed on the revised schedule, it could offer commuters a more convenient journey between Andheri, Juhu, Vile Parle and Versova by the end of 2027.
