Maharashtra Plans Fifth Film City In Guhagar, Eyes Rs 100 Crore Initial Investment

Maharashtra is considering establishing its fifth Film City in the picturesque coastal region of Guhagar taluka in Ratnagiri district, with an initial investment of approximately Rs 100 crore. The proposed facility is planned across 125 acres of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) land spanning Palshet, Velneshwar and Tavsal villages.

The tourism and cultural affairs departments are preparing a detailed project report, with development through a public-private partnership (PPP) among the options being examined. The project aims to strengthen film production infrastructure in the Konkan region, which attracts filmmakers with its beaches and natural landscapes, according to a report by a news agency.

An official from the Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation Limited (MFSCDCL) said that Dapoli and Guhagar have regularly drawn film and television crews. However, limited access to studios, accommodation and logistical facilities has created challenges for production teams working in the area.

The proposed complex could feature two or three studios, accommodation for crew members and dedicated shooting locations for films and television serials. MTDC is involved in the planning process and already operates accommodation facilities in the region.

Former Guhagar MLA Vinay Natu reportedly initiated the proposal after learning about the difficulties faced by production teams. Marathi films, including Kaksparsh and Bapya, as well as television serials, have previously been filmed in Dapoli and Guhagar. The new facility is intended to address infrastructure gaps and attract more productions to the Konkan coastline.

Detailed proposal expected within a month

Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar recently met Natu, MFSCDCL officials and tourism department representatives to discuss the project. MHADA vice-chairman Sanjeev Jaiswal offered assistance with infrastructure development.

Shelar has directed the cultural affairs department to assess funding arrangements and submit a detailed proposal within one month. The project is expected to create local employment and support tourism and economic activity.

The plan complements Maharashtra’s wider film infrastructure expansion strategy, which includes a Rs 3,000-crore upgrade of Goregaon Film City and proposals for facilities in Nagpur and Nashik. A separate Film City on around 150 acres of central government-owned land in Malad is also under consideration.
