Mumbai Metro Unveils First Made-In-India Driverless Trainset With 90 kmph Speed Capability

Mumbai’s metro expansion is gaining momentum as Alstom unveils the first trainset for Metro Lines 4 and 4A, manufactured at its facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The development comes as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis aims to make 2027 the “Metro Year”, with at least 70 km of additional metro corridors targeted for completion.

Alstom said the driverless Metropolis trainset was developed in 14 months, highlighting collaboration between the company, the Maharashtra government, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

“Mumbai’ next chapter of urban mobility is here! Delivered in a record time of 14 months, we today unveiled the first trainset for Mumbai Metro Line 4 and 4A at Alstom Manufacturing Site Sri City. An incredible milestone for Team Alstom India, this achievement is a true testament to the power of collaboration, dedication and shared vision. Alongside the Government of Maharashtra, MMRDA and L&T, we are bringing advanced metro technology to Mumbai and Thane,” Alstom India said in a statement.

The company added that the trains incorporate advanced signalling and features intended to improve safety, accessibility and passenger comfort. Designed in Bengaluru, the coaches are manufactured in Sri City, with propulsion systems supplied from Coimbatore and bogies produced in Savli, Gujarat.

Modern Features for Commuters

The trainsets are designed for speeds of up to 90 kmph, with an operational speed of 80 kmph. Amenities include airflow-based cooling, wheelchair accessibility and dedicated bicycle racks, which Alstom identifies as a first for its trains in India. These facilities aim to support comfortable journeys and better last-mile connectivity.

The trains feature a green-and-blue exterior inspired by MMRDA’s vision for a connected and sustainable Mumbai. Alstom said its Eco-design approach also considers environmental performance and fire-safety requirements in material selection.

Metro Expansion Targets

Fadnavis has directed officials to accelerate ongoing infrastructure works and expand the metro corridor length scheduled for completion by December 2026 from 36 km to 50 km. He has also called for at least 50% mechanisation of infrastructure projects to address labour shortages and improve execution timelines.

Under the contract awarded by MMRDA, Alstom will supply 39 driverless trainsets, signalling systems and five years of maintenance to L&T, which is executing the integrated systems package for Lines 4 and 4A.

Alstom has also supplied trains and signalling for the operational Aqua Line and is providing signalling and telecommunications systems for Lines 2 and 7, along with signalling for Lines 7A and 9. The latest unveiling adds to its role in Mumbai’s expanding metro network.
