Mumbai Set For Three Key Road Links As Sion, Vidyavihar Bridges May Open This Weekend

Motorists in Mumbai could soon benefit from three long-awaited infrastructure projects, with the Sion bridge, Vidyavihar bridge and the Goregaon connector expected to open to traffic over the weekend. Although construction on all three structures has been completed, their formal inauguration is pending, with civic officials citing the availability of the chief minister and deputy chief minister as the reason for the delay.

The wait has attracted criticism from Opposition leaders, who have questioned why commuters cannot use the completed infrastructure while awaiting a ceremonial opening.

Aaditya Thackeray Calls for Immediate Public Access

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray has urged the state government to make the Sion bridge operational without waiting for a VIP visit or an auspicious date.

“Please don’t wait for mahurats and VIP dates to open up this bridge.” Thackeray said in a social media post tagging the Chief Minister’s Office.

Describing the bridge as an important connectivity link that residents had waited a long time to see rebuilt, Thackeray called for it to be opened to the public at the earliest. He argued that commuters should not be inconvenienced simply because senior political leaders are unavailable to attend the inauguration.

The demand has brought attention to the broader question of whether completed public infrastructure should remain inaccessible until formal ceremonies can be arranged.

Vidyavihar Bridge Ready for Traffic

Ghatkopar MLA Parag Shah also indicated that the Vidyavihar bridge could open shortly, confirming that construction work had been completed.

“Opening may take place anytime of the Vidyavihar bridge as works on it are completed.”

The bridge is expected to improve connectivity around Vidyavihar railway station, helping motorists travel between adjoining areas more conveniently.

Three Projects Await Final Clearance

The Sion and Vidyavihar bridges, along with the Goregaon connector, are expected to strengthen road connectivity across different parts of Mumbai once opened. Their completion represents progress on infrastructure intended to ease travel and improve links between neighbourhoods.

However, the opening dates remain dependent on the pending inauguration arrangements. With construction finished, commuters are now awaiting confirmation from the authorities on when these routes will become accessible to the public.
