Thane Coastal Road-1 Reaches 45% Completion, 10 Girders Installed In A Day

The Thane Coastal Road-1 project has achieved 45% completion after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) installed 10 I-girders in a single day, marking a significant construction milestone for the infrastructure corridor.

The record was set on October 14, 2026, when the project team surpassed its usual daily installation rate of four to six girders. The achievement highlights progress on the road project, which is intended to strengthen connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Stretching 13.45 kilometres, Thane Coastal Road-1 is being developed as a six-lane, access-controlled corridor connecting Kharegaon Toll Naka, near National Highways 3 and 48, with Gaimukh. The route is expected to provide an additional travel option for motorists and reduce dependence on the existing Ghodbunder Road.

The project is designed to improve movement between the Mumbai–Nashik Highway and Gaimukh, offering commuters and freight operators another route through the rapidly developing Thane region. Once operational, the corridor is expected to improve road connectivity and provide an alternative to existing routes used for daily travel and goods transportation.

According to MMRDA, installing 10 I-girders within a single day represents a notable improvement over the construction team’s normal daily output. The milestone comes as the overall project reaches nearly halfway through its planned execution.

The six-lane, access-controlled design is intended to facilitate more direct movement between Kharegaon and Gaimukh while improving access to important highway connections. By creating another route through the region, the project is expected to support smoother traffic movement as residential development and commercial activity continue to expand across Thane and neighbouring areas.

The coastal road forms part of broader infrastructure development efforts aimed at strengthening connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Its eventual opening is expected to offer motorists an additional option for travelling between key locations and improve access to the Mumbai–Nashik transport corridor.

With construction progress now at 45%, the latest girder installation milestone marks an important step towards completing the project and expanding Thane’s road network.
