Thane Coastal Road Crosses 45% Completion Mark After Record Girder Installation

The achievement surpassed the usual daily output of four to six girders, an official statement said

The Thane Coastal Road-1 project has reached 45% completion, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) achieving a significant construction milestone by installing 10 I-girders in a single day on October 14, 2026.

According to an official statement issued on Monday, the achievement exceeded the project team’s usual daily output of four to six girders, marking progress in the development of the major road corridor.

The project aims to strengthen connectivity across Thane and provide an alternative to the heavily used Ghodbunder Road, which handles substantial traffic between several important destinations.

13.45-km Corridor to Improve Connectivity

The proposed corridor will extend 13.45 km and feature six lanes with access-controlled entry and exit points. It will connect National Highway 3 and National Highway 48 at Kharegaon Toll Naka with Gaimukh.

Once operational, the road is expected to improve travel between the Mumbai-Nashik Highway and Gaimukh while reducing pressure on Ghodbunder Road. It is also intended to provide faster and safer movement for vehicles travelling towards Thane, Nashik, Bhiwandi, Gujarat and northern India.

Advanced Construction Techniques

The project incorporates several engineering features, including a proposed 240-metre bridge across a creek and an 8.11-km elevated stretch passing through mangrove areas.

According to project authorities, it will be India’s first greenfield road project to adopt a single-pile, single-pier arrangement using monopile foundations on land. This construction method is expected to support the development of the corridor.

A 40–45-metre-wide Development Plan road has also been reserved as part of the project. The planned road is expected to help distinguish local traffic from vehicles travelling longer distances along Ghodbunder Road.

Integration with Future Infrastructure

Thane Coastal Road-1 is expected to form part of a broader transport network connecting upcoming infrastructure projects, including the Thane Ring Metro, Thane Coastal Road-2, the Saket-Amane Elevated Corridor and the Kasarvadavali-Kharbhav Road.

Once these projects are integrated, they are expected to improve regional mobility and strengthen transport links across Thane and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The latest girder installation milestone marks another step towards achieving these connectivity objectives.
