Colaba Causeway To Introduce 91 Standardised Stalls Under Rs 2.28 Crore Plan

Colaba Causeway to get 91 uniform-sized hawker stalls to clear footpaths

Mumbai’s popular shopping destination, Colaba Causeway, is set for a revamp with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) planning to install 91 uniformly designed hawker stalls under a Rs 2.28-crore project. The initiative aims to reduce footpath congestion, improve pedestrian movement and enhance the area’s appearance for shoppers and tourists.

The project will be funded entirely by the District Planning and Development Council (DPDC). Colaba is expected to become Mumbai’s first locality to introduce standardised vending stalls reserved for verified street vendors. Local MLA and Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, along with former BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar, have supported the proposal, which also includes uniform shop signboards and improvements to road infrastructure.

Under the proposed system, only vendors possessing the BMC’s official identity cards equipped with QR codes will be permitted to use the new stalls. Infrastructure company Pushpam Infraprojects has been assigned the work of constructing the units, each measuring approximately one metre by one metre.

“By streamlining stall layouts into a unified, disciplined design, the project ensures that vibrant street commerce will coexist seamlessly with pedestrian movement,” stated Makarand Narwekar, emphasising that a BMC-managed hawker system was the most viable path forward for Mumbai’s commercial streets.

The plan follows the installation of a prototype stall at Colaba Causeway. The first batch of official stalls is expected to arrive in the coming weeks. A civic official said, “If the pilot proves successful here, the BMC plans to replicate the standardised hawking stall template across other key hawking zones in Mumbai,”

Narwekar said the initiative would “significantly boost the local aesthetics and tourism appeal of Colaba”. He added, “Uniform street vending stalls to eligible vendors will improve Mumbai pedestrian movement,”

“Given that thousands of shoppers, including international tourists, frequently visit areas like Colaba Causeway, the successful implementation of this project will elevate it to a world-class shopping destination.”

The civic body hopes the initiative will create a more organised vending environment while allowing street commerce to continue alongside safer, less obstructed pedestrian access.
