Tata Power and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) have entered into a memorandum of understanding to develop power infrastructure worth Rs 250 crore for BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) at its Mumbai refinery. The facilities are expected to be ready within approximately 24 months.
Under the agreement, Tata Power will establish 110 kV connectivity and undertake the design and development of the supporting infrastructure. According to an official announcement by the companies, the system will meet the unit’s electricity requirement of 90 MW.
The infrastructure will support BPCL’s Rs 14,203-crore PRFCCU project, which is designed to process three million metric tonnes of material annually. The facility aims to extract more valuable products from refinery residues, supporting BPCL’s strategy to diversify its petrochemical operations and improve the value generated from existing refinery output.
The companies described the PRFCCU as the first project of its kind being undertaken in India. Reliable high-voltage power connectivity will be essential to its operations and the broader refinery expansion.
Trombay Network to Receive Further Investment
The partnership is also expected to strengthen Tata Power’s transmission network in Trombay, a major industrial and energy hub in Mumbai. The area houses large industrial facilities that require dependable electricity supplies, making additional transmission capacity important as demand increases.
The planned 110 kV connection will directly serve the refinery unit, while the associated network development will add capacity to support industrial electricity consumption in the locality.
Separately, Tata Power intends to develop a 400 kV transmission facility at Trombay over the next five years. The proposed investment forms part of its broader efforts to reinforce Mumbai’s electricity network, improve power evacuation capacity and enhance grid reliability for industrial and commercial consumers.
Supporting Mumbai’s Growing Power Demand
The agreement connects BPCL’s refinery expansion with Tata Power’s wider transmission development plans. While the immediate requirement is 90 MW for the PRFCCU, the additional network capacity is expected to contribute to meeting the needs of other large consumers in the Trombay area.
The 110 kV infrastructure is targeted for completion in around two years. The companies have not announced a specific commissioning timeline for the proposed 400 kV facility.
