Metro 5 Extension Moves Closer To Ulhasnagar As MMRDA Floats Tenders For Three Phases

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken a significant step towards extending Metro Line 5 from Thane and Bhiwandi through Kalyan to Ulhasnagar, inviting tenders for the construction of three sections of the expanded corridor. The proposed works cover Phase 2, between Dhamankar Naka and Durgadi; Phase 3, connecting Durgadi to Kalyan; and Phase 5A, linking Bhoirwadi with Ulhasnagar.

Following approvals from both the Maharashtra government and the Centre, the authority intends to complete the tendering process in early 2027 and begin construction thereafter.

The original 24.9-km Metro 5 corridor, connecting Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan, is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 8,400 crore. Construction of its first section, from Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka, is approximately 98% complete. The stretch is expected to begin passenger operations in early 2027, subject to the necessary safety clearance.

The extension’s alignment underwent changes because of rehabilitation and resettlement challenges along the proposed Bhiwandi-Kalyan route. An earlier plan to construct an elevated corridor between Durgadi and Kalyan was subsequently modified to include an underground section. The alignment was revised again following directions from the state government, resulting in the three-phase expansion plan.

The revised proposal received state approval before being forwarded to the Centre. The central government cleared the alignment and issued a notification in August, enabling the project to move towards implementation.

According to the tender schedule, interested contractors can submit bids until December 2. Phase 2, covering 10.48 km and six stations between Dhamankar Naka and Durgadi, is estimated to cost Rs 7,326 crore. Phase 3 will span approximately 11.82 km, with seven stations connecting Durgadi and Kalyan. Its estimated cost is reported as Rs 463 crore. Phase 5A, between Bhoirwadi and Ulhasnagar, will cover 5.27 km.

Once completed, the extended corridor is expected to improve connectivity across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar, reducing travel time for commuters.
