The Maharashtra government is favourably considering the adoption of Haryana’s model for contractual workers, Labour Minister Akash Fundkar said on Tuesday. The state is awaiting recommendations from a committee headed by the Labour Commissioner before deciding on the proposed implementation.
Fundkar made the announcement during a meeting with representatives of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) at Mantralaya in Mumbai, where several concerns relating to workers and their welfare were discussed.
The minister said the government would examine the committee’s findings and take appropriate steps based on its recommendations. The panel, constituted under the Labour Commissioner’s leadership, is currently expected to submit its report, which will guide the next course of action.
Another key issue raised during the discussions concerned the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme. Fundkar assured the BMS representatives that arrangements would be made for them to meet Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss matters related to the scheme and seek solutions to their concerns.
The meeting also covered welfare measures for domestic workers and construction labourers. The minister assured the delegation that the government would consider their demands positively and work towards introducing suitable welfare initiatives under the provisions of the new labour laws.
The proposed measures are aimed at strengthening social security and improving support systems for workers across different employment categories.
BMS national secretary Anil Dumane and Maharashtra state president Kiran Milgir were among those who attended the meeting.
The discussions come amid efforts to address concerns surrounding contractual employment, workers’ social security and access to welfare benefits. The state government’s response to the Labour Commissioner-led committee’s recommendations will determine whether Haryana’s approach is adopted in Maharashtra.
