The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has revamped a 250-metre stretch beneath the Princess Street flyover in Mumbai, converting a previously neglected area into a more accessible and visually appealing public space. The redevelopment features new pedestrian pathways, landscaped gardens, decorative lighting and a large 3D mural.
Previously, pedestrians using the E Road and H Road sections beneath the flyover had no designated walking space and were compelled to share the carriageway with vehicles, creating safety concerns and affecting traffic movement.
The situation was particularly difficult along H Road, which has a width of barely four metres. Public toilets, a municipal bank and a solid waste management facility further occupied the limited available space, making pedestrian access challenging.
To resolve these issues, the civic body shifted structures that obstructed movement and reorganised the area to create dedicated walking spaces and improve its overall appearance.
Under the project, a 150-metre-long footpath has been developed along E Road, while H Road now features a 100-metre winding pedestrian pathway. A prominent 3D mural covering approximately 400 square metres has also been painted on the boundary wall along E Road, adding an artistic element to the surroundings.
The entire 250-metre stretch has been enhanced with landscaped gardens and greenery. Plants suited to low-light conditions have been selected for the area, while decorative streetlights have been installed to improve its appearance. An automated drip irrigation facility will ensure regular watering and maintenance of the plants.
Additionally, a 45-square-metre multipurpose structure has been constructed to accommodate a caretaker’s room, storage space and security cabin, supporting the upkeep and protection of the landscaped area.
The renovated stretch was inaugurated on Tuesday by Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker and local MLA Rahul Narwekar. The event was attended by C and D Ward Committee Chairman Akash Purohit, local corporator Rita Makwana, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 1) Chanda Jadhav and C Ward Assistant Commissioner Sunil Mane.
