The proposed Manmad–Indore railway corridor is expected to improve rail connectivity between Mumbai and Indore, while opening up better transport access to several districts across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The 309-km greenfield Broad Gauge project involves an estimated investment of Rs 18,036 crore and is scheduled for completion by FY29.
The Union Cabinet approved the project in September 2024. The railway alignment will pass through six districts, including Nashik and Dhule in Maharashtra, and Barwani, Khargone, Dhar and Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Plans also include the development of 30 new railway stations along the route to expand passenger connectivity.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the corridor will connect approximately 1,000 villages and benefit nearly three million people. It is expected to establish a more direct rail link between the two commercial centres while bringing railway services to areas with limited existing connectivity.
Construction Contracts and Infrastructure Development
Central Railway has invited tenders for developing a 75.50-km stretch between Wanihar and Gyaspur Khedi in Madhya Pradesh. Valued at Rs 2,548 crore, the contract covers the construction of bridges and tunnels, track installation, signalling infrastructure, overhead electrification, railway facilities and associated electrical works.
Boost to Industrial and Agricultural Transportation
The corridor is expected to facilitate freight transportation between the Pithampur Auto Cluster, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and other ports in the state. Pithampur’s industrial ecosystem comprises approximately 90 large manufacturing units and 700 small and medium enterprises.
The railway connection is also expected to benefit agricultural trade by linking millet-producing regions in Madhya Pradesh with onion-growing districts in Maharashtra. Improved transportation could help farmers and traders access markets across northern and southern India.
Additionally, better connectivity to the Ujjain–Indore region, including the Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, is expected to support religious tourism and regional economic activity.
