BMC Plans 18-Month Repair Drive For Bridges & Flyovers Along Western Express Highway

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a Rs 57.61-crore infrastructure repair programme covering bridges, flyovers, foot overbridges (FOBs) and pedestrian subways along the Western Express Highway (WEH), aiming to improve structural safety and extend the lifespan of ageing structures.

The project, approved by Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, will cover infrastructure between Bandra and Dahisar. The civic body’s Bridges Department has started the tendering process, with the entire exercise expected to be completed within 18 months.

Repairs to Strengthen Ageing Structures

The proposed work will involve replacing bridge bearings, filling concrete cracks, fixing expansion joints and reinforcing structural components, including girders, dividers and parapet walls. Deteriorated parts will also be replaced, alongside minor maintenance wherever required.

“The repairs will include replacement of bridge bearings, filling concrete cracks, repairing expansion joints, strengthening girders, dividers and parapet walls, and replacing deteriorated structural components. Minor repairs will also be undertaken wherever necessary,” said a senior civic official.

Zone-Wise Distribution of Funds

The BMC has divided the programme into separate geographical zones. An allocation of Rs 25.79 crore has been made for Zones 3 and 4, covering Bandra, Santacruz, Vile Parle and Malad. Another Rs 31.81 crore has been set aside for Zone 7, which includes Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar.

Major Bridges and Flyovers Included

The repair programme will cover several important structures across H-East, H-West, K-East, K-West, P-South, P-North, R-South, R-Central and R-North wards.

Key locations include the Dahisar East Metro Station foot overbridge, Rawalpada FOB, Dahisar River Bridge, Thakur Complex and Mahindra flyovers in Kandivali, Kalanagar and Bandra flyovers, and the Kherwadi flyover.

Other structures identified for repairs include the Vakola pedestrian subway in Santacruz, Dindoshi flyover, the bridge near the Times of India premises in Malad, Devipada pedestrian subway and Magathane FOB.

The civic body has prioritised the structures based on condition assessments, seeking to address deterioration and improve commuter safety along one of Mumbai’s busiest road corridors.
