BMC Implements On-Ground Testing To Ensure Better Roads In Western Suburbs

The road’s strength and load-bearing capability are guaranteed by the civic authorities’ requirement that Field Dry Density (FDD) testing be carried out during the concretisation process. Wednesday saw the one-day pouring of 3,116 cubic meters of concrete across 101 roads in the western suburbs. But when it comes to carrying out these projects, BMC has emphasised how crucial it is to strike a balance between speed and quality.

On Wednesday evening, Abhijeet Bangar, an additional municipal commissioner, unexpectedly inspected the concretisation work being done on roads in the Western suburbs. He went to Pawanbagh Marg in Goregaon West, Hanuman Nagar and Natwar Nagar in Jogeshwari East, Sri Ayyappa Temple Marg in Borivali West, and Shri Agrasen Maharaj Chowk in Santa Cruz East. During the tour, it was noted that at Pawanbagh Marg and Shri Agrasen Maharaj Chowk, Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) was laid prior to the Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) work. DLC is a drier, low-cement concrete that is used as a foundation for PQC. A road roller compacts the DLC through several passes after it has been poured.

“If more roller passes are required, the ‘Field Dry Density’ test guarantees adequate compaction. Regular inspections are essential for preserving the integrity of the infrastructure, and this procedure ensures the road’s strength, load-bearing capability, and long-term stability,” Bangar stated. In the meantime, trees were seen to be impacted by the concrete construction being done on Sri Ayyappa Temple Marg in Borivali West. Bangar gave the order to change the road’s alignment in order to save the trees. “It’s crucial to strike the right balance between speed and quality when working on roads. He continued, “Care should be taken to ensure that no potholes develop on roads that are not yet being worked on.”

A number of tests, including field dry density tests, slump tests, cube tests, and moisture content instruments, were carried out at the actual construction sites of every road during the inspection. According to the civic official, the test findings were deemed satisfactory. Representatives from the quality control organisation, Chief Engineer (Roads and Transportation) Girish Nikam, Deputy Chief Engineer (Western Suburbs) Sanjay Borse, and Assistant Professor Solomon Debbarma from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay attended the inspection.
