In a landmark development for Mumbai’s transport infrastructure, the city is poised to welcome its first new suburban railway terminus in over 30 years. The upcoming Jogeshwari Terminus, strategically located between Andheri and Goregaon on the Western Line, is scheduled to become operational by November 2025.
This greenfield project is Mumbai’s first suburban rail terminus since the opening of Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in 1991, and it promises to significantly decongest overcrowded rail hubs such as Bandra, Dadar, and Mumbai Central.
Spread across four acres, the Jogeshwari Terminus is being developed by Western Railway with three new platforms—two for long-distance mail and express trains, and one for stabling and maintenance operations. It is designed to handle both originating and terminating services, helping to redistribute passenger load from the city’s saturated stations.
Jogeshwari’s selection as the terminus site is no coincidence. The suburb is a key connectivity node, with direct links to the Western Express Highway, the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), and upcoming Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar–Vikhroli), which will dramatically enhance east-west travel.
This integration of suburban rail, arterial roads, and metro lines makes Jogeshwari a future-ready multi-modal transport hub.
For daily commuters, the terminus will mean shorter transit times, improved accessibility, and less overcrowding on existing routes. For the city at large, it signals a shift towards decentralised transport planning, easing pressure on the congested south and central railway terminals.
Historically, such infrastructure projects have had a multiplier effect on real estate, commercial activity, and urban growth. Just as LTT and Borivali Terminus reshaped their localities, Jogeshwari—especially the eastern precincts—could see a surge in property values and investment interest.
The Jogeshwari Terminus is not a stand-alone initiative, but a part of a broader blueprint to create satellite railway hubs across Mumbai. As population and commuter volumes continue to grow, authorities are moving toward long-term, sustainable rail infrastructure that is scalable and commuter-centric.
The terminus will also be seamlessly integrated with Jogeshwari’s existing suburban railway platforms, allowing effortless transfer for local passengers. Commuter-centric amenities such as escalators, digital information boards, waiting areas, and better circulation space are also planned to elevate the passenger experience.
As of April 2025, work on the platforms, approach roads, and associated infrastructure is underway. Officials are targeting project completion by late 2025, with trial runs and safety checks to follow before full commissioning.
More than a new railway stop, the Jogeshwari Terminus is a symbol of planned urban growth, modern transit planning, and a vision to future-proof Mumbai’s suburban rail network. It will not only offer new routes, but also unlock opportunities for housing, employment, and mobility in one of Mumbai’s most rapidly evolving corridors.
