BMC Plans Two Key Road Projects & Cable-Stayed Bridge To Ease Traffic At Mulund-Airoli Junction

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is studying two significant road construction projects in an effort to reduce traffic at the congested Prabhu Shri Ram Chowk, also called the Mulund-Airoli Junction, on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH).

The decision follows a detailed meeting held on Monday at the BMC headquarters between Mulund MLA Mihir Kotecha and Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani. The primary agenda was to address key civic issues affecting the Mulund Assembly Constituency, particularly the chronic traffic snarls at the junction.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Kotecha stated, “Prabhu Shri Ram Chowk faces daily traffic congestion, resulting in delays and commuter frustration. I have proposed the creation of four new free left-arm roads at the Mulund-Airoli Junction. This initiative could reduce travel time by nearly 15 minutes and decongest the area significantly.”

In addition, Kotecha has proposed the construction of a two-way cable-stayed bridge above the Eastern Express Highway at the same junction. “The bridge will provide a direct elevated route for vehicles heading towards Airoli, further reducing congestion and enhancing traffic efficiency,” he explained.

The proposed bridge and left-turn routes aim to streamline vehicular flow from Mulund towards Navi Mumbai, a corridor that experiences particularly high peak-hour pressure.

Beyond infrastructure, Kotecha also raised several other pressing civic concerns, including the irregular low-pressure water supply, delays in cement concrete road projects, the presence of Bangladeshi hawkers, illegal use of gas cylinders on public streets, and the long-standing issue of the Kanjurmarg dumping ground.

The necessary departments have already received instructions to examine and assess the suggested changes, with a focus on practical follow-up, according to Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani. Both locals and daily commuters may find relief from these improvements, which could significantly enhance the area’s traffic and civic environment.
