July 16, 2025: Mumbai’s ambitious Metro Line 4 is poised to begin trial operations with a remarkable logistical workaround: transporting train coaches by road, owing to delays in depot construction. This adaptive strategy, led by the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), reflects the state’s determination to uphold project timelines and expand urban mobility.
Spanning 32 kilometres, Metro Line 4 will connect Gaimukh in Thane to Wadala in Mumbai, forming a crucial component of the city’s growing public transport infrastructure. However, the ongoing development of its dedicated Mogharpada depot has presented a significant challenge. In response, authorities have devised a practical solution to initiate trials without awaiting depot completion.
The operation involves transporting eight six-coach trains—48 coaches in total—from the Mandale depot in Mankhurd to the Metro 4 viaduct between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction. Due to the lack of direct track connectivity between Metro Line 2B and Line 4, each 40-tonne coach will be individually mounted on specialised hydraulic trailers for road transfer. A contract worth Rs 8.28 crore has been awarded to oversee this complex process.
Transport will take place during night hours to minimise disruption to Mumbai’s heavily congested roads. The movement requires multiple permissions from civic and traffic authorities and may involve partial dismantling of coaches, transit insurance, and precision unloading.
Authorities are also establishing temporary inspection and testing facilities beyond Gaimukh station. These will support trials for critical systems such as signalling, telecommunications, and traction.
Once operational, Metro Line 4 is expected to alleviate pressure on the Eastern Express Highway and significantly boost east-west connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. By promoting sustainable and inclusive urban transport, the line supports the city’s long-term vision of reducing carbon emissions and improving accessibility for all residents.
