Work On Goregaon-Mulund Link Road To Begin Next Month; Final TBM Parts Arriving From Japan

July 21, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to commence the main construction work on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project next month, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at significantly improving east-west connectivity in Mumbai. Designed to reduce travel time between Goregaon and Mulund from 75 minutes to just 25 minutes, the GMLR is poised to be a game-changer for commuters.

Preparatory activities for the project have already started, but the major construction phase will begin once the final shipment of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) parts arrives from Japan. Out of a total of 77 trailers transporting TBM components, 54 have already reached Mumbai. The remaining 23 are scheduled to arrive by August 15, following which assembly will begin at the launch shaft near Film City in Goregaon.

Two massive TBMs will be deployed to construct twin tunnels, each measuring 6.65 km in length and approximately 14.5 metres in width. These tunnels will pass beneath the ecologically sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park, navigating complex geological terrain.

The Indian Express reported that the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road is among the widest road projects undertaken by the BMC. Once completed, it will offer a direct route from Goregaon in the western suburbs to Mulund in the eastern suburbs. The twin tunnels will start from Film City and surface near Amar Junction in Mulund.

“Interestingly, these two tunnels will pass beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park, cutting through challenging terrain,” the report noted.

Piling and shaft development are already underway, and the TBMs are expected to begin boring simultaneously once the assembly is completed. The project marks a significant step in easing congestion and enhancing travel efficiency across Mumbai.
