Mumbai’s Shivaji Park Gears Up For Heritage-Inspired Facelift

July 30, 2025: Shivaji Park, one of Mumbai’s most iconic open spaces, is set for a major transformation as part of a heritage-conscious upgrade by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This landmark space, spanning nearly 28 acres with a 1.3-kilometre-long promenade, is frequented by joggers, walkers, and leisure seekers from across the city—from Colaba to Bandra.

Surrounded by established institutions such as gymnasiums and yoga centres, including the renowned Shivaji Park Gymkhana, the park is notable for offering two walking routes: an outer footpath and an inner jogging track. Many of the trees lining the park are said to be over 80 years old, as per local residents.

The renovation plan, expected to begin by October or November, is scheduled for completion before the 2026 monsoon. The BMC aims to upgrade key infrastructure while maintaining the park’s historic character. Works will include refurbishment of jogging paths, replacement of tiled seating areas with reinforced concrete for heritage alignment, upgraded footpaths and tree guards, improved fencing, and better lighting throughout.

Statues at park entrances, including depictions of various sports, will be restored along with the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue and the historic Manora tower.

Assistant Commissioner of G North ward, Vinayak Vispute, stated that tenders will be floated soon to ensure ground work begins in the dry season. He added that only BMC-approved activities would be permitted to preserve the park’s aesthetic integrity.

Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani also addressed local concerns about red soil dust. In response, the BMC began laying American Bermuda grass across two trial plots, based on recommendations from IIT-Bombay and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. The success of this trial will help determine whether grass turfing will be expanded across the entire park.
