August 12, 2025: In a bid to transform Navi Mumbai’s public transport from functional to world-class, the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) has announced an expansive metro network blueprint. Spanning 76 kilometres across six lines and more than 40 stations, the plan promises to redefine urban mobility in the rapidly growing city.
Part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), the network will cover both Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas, linking NAINA, Taloja, the forthcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), and major commercial hubs.
Alongside the existing proposed Metro Lines 1A and 2, CIDCO has tabled new routes, including a link from Targhar suburban railway station via NAINA to NMIA, and another from International Corporate Park in Kharghar to NAINA through Kalamboli.
“The metro network is designed to handle the anticipated commuter surge over the next 30 years. Prosperity is rooted in connectivity, and we are moving from basic infrastructure to a comprehensive economic growth plan aligned with the Centre’s Vision 2047,” a senior CIDCO official stated.
The CMP is a component of the Comprehensive Transport Study conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). As per procedure, all proposed lines must be part of the CMP before seeking funding from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Cabinet approval is awaited for three lines, including the 34.9km “Gold Line” (Corridor 8) from CSMIA to NMIA with around 20 stations. Also pending are Line 1A (Sagarsangam–Belapur, 3km, two stations) and Line 2 (Pendhar–NMIA East, 16km, 15 stations via Taloja and Kalamboli). Completion is targeted for 2031, in line with the projected 90 million airport passengers by 2030.
