August 12, 2025: Significant progress has been made in the reconstruction of the Belasis flyover, a key connector between Tardeo-Nagpada and Mumbai Central railway station. The 130-year-old British-era Belasis bridge is currently being demolished and rebuilt. While Western Railway undertakes work within the railway’s jurisdiction, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is managing the construction of the approach roads.
In the first phase, the railway contractor recently completed the installation of 12 girders, each measuring 36 metres in length. Following this, work has commenced on girder bracing, construction of the bridge deck surface, and slab casting, which will involve 40 blocks in total.
The civic body aims to finish the Belasis bridge reconstruction by 31 December 2025. The BMC, in collaboration with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), has signed an agreement with the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) to build a cable-stayed bridge over the railway line near Mumbai Central station.
Although the project was initially slated for completion in April 2026, Abhijit Bangar, Additional Commissioner (Projects), has instructed that the deadline be brought forward to the end of December 2025. Soil testing, foundation work, and pillar construction for the bridge have been completed, with obstructing structures removed to facilitate progress. The eastern approach road requires 40 girders, four of which have already been installed.
By August 10, Western Railway had completed installation of 12 girders within the railway area. Girder bracing, bridge deck surfacing, and slab casting are expected to conclude by September 14, 2025. Bangar confirmed that the BMC plans to finalise the entire project by December 31, 2025.
