450-Tonne Steel Span Installed For Mumbai Metro Line 4 By MMRDA

August 12, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a major milestone in the construction of Metro Line 4, with the successful installation of a massive steel span over the Pantnagar–Ghatkopar bus stand in Ghatkopar East.

The span, measuring 58 metres in length and 3.1 metres in height, weighs an impressive 450 tonnes and is made up of five steel girders. Remarkably, the entire structure was lifted and positioned in just two nights, despite challenging conditions that included persistent heavy rainfall, continuous traffic on the Andheri–Ghatkopar Link Road, and limited working space due to the proximity of Somaiya Nallah.

To manage the complex operation, MMRDA deployed heavy-duty equipment, including cranes of 700-metric-tonne and 500-metric-tonne capacity, supported by backup cranes of 500 and 80 tonnes. Over 100 workers, engineers, and safety personnel were on-site, along with more than 50 trained traffic management staff to maintain smooth vehicular movement. Additional equipment included six trailers, three Hydras, three Eicher trucks, three manlifters, and a standby ambulance for emergencies.

The Wadala–Kasarvadavali Metro Line 4, which will significantly enhance east–west connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is now 84.5% complete. Once operational, it is expected to reduce travel times and ease congestion along key corridors.

MMRDA has credited the successful placement of the span to the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies and the guidance of government authorities. Officials emphasised that this installation represents not only a technical achievement but also a decisive step towards delivering a modern, efficient, and safe urban transport system for Mumbai’s growing population.
