August 13, 2025: Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced that trial runs for Mumbai Metro’s Line 4, linking Wadala to Kasarvadavli, will commence in September. The update came during a review meeting for the project, which is being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Full commercial services are anticipated to begin by the end of this year.
Stretching 32.3 kilometres and comprising 32 stations, the corridor is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 14,500 crore. It is regarded as a significant addition to the city’s public transport network, expected to ease road congestion and substantially cut travel times between south-central Mumbai and Thane. The original completion date was set for 2024; however, the current timeline reflects a revised schedule that appears to be on track.
The elevated line will feature interchanges with Metro 2B, Metro 5, and Metro 6, enhancing connectivity across the city’s growing metro network. The project is being executed in three phases, with the initial segment between Wadala and Ghatkopar prepared for trial runs next month. According to MMRDA officials, construction is in its final stages, with track installation and system integration progressing swiftly.
Once operational, Metro Line 4 is projected to serve over 800,000 passengers daily, offering a faster, more reliable alternative to road travel. Transport planners believe the line will not only improve commuter convenience but also encourage a shift towards more sustainable modes of travel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Shinde emphasised that the state government remains committed to expediting metro projects to alleviate urban transport challenges. The successful commissioning of Line 4 is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the city’s infrastructure and lay the groundwork for further expansion of the metro network.
