August 23, 2025: Citizens performing dashvidhi (last rites) rituals at Belapur village jetty are reportedly facing significant hardships due to a lack of basic facilities, BJP MLA Manda Mhatre said following an inspection of the site.
Residents from Belapur and surrounding areas frequently visit the jetty to conduct post-cremation rituals. However, in the absence of proper shelter or amenities, families are often left standing in the open for extended periods, even during heavy rainfall. Mhatre highlighted that makeshift tin sheets and a neglected shed at the site have exacerbated the difficulties for grieving families.
She noted that as the land is under the jurisdiction of the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), even developmental work initiated under her MLA fund has been stalled. “Authorities must explain why only tin sheets have been erected here and take immediate steps to provide relief to the families performing last rites,” she said.
Mhatre has urged CIDCO’s Managing Director to intervene promptly, ensure that the pathway to the jetty is accessible, and provide necessary facilities without further delay.
