September 18, 2025: The Maharashtra government has announced plans to modernise Mumbai’s historic Sassoon Dock in partnership with Finland, Fisheries and Port Development Minister Nitesh Rane said on Wednesday.
During a meeting at the dock, Rane engaged with a delegation of Finnish officials and company representatives to discuss strategic plans for upgrading the 19th-century harbour. According to an official release, the collaboration will focus on technology-driven improvements aimed at addressing long-standing operational and environmental challenges.
Sassoon Dock, one of Mumbai’s oldest and busiest fishing hubs, has been operating far beyond its original capacity. This overuse has raised concerns regarding hygiene, odour, fish handling practices, and overall safety. The proposed modernisation includes the introduction of modular infrastructure designed to improve efficiency while ensuring sustainability.
The project aims to transform Sassoon Dock into a world-class harbour that is clean, safe, and environmentally responsible. Discussions with Finnish stakeholders centred on advanced fishing techniques, digital solutions, and eco-friendly innovations that could streamline operations and boost the earnings of local fishermen.
Rane highlighted the government’s positive outlook on the initiative and stressed the importance of international cooperation, particularly through technology transfer, to achieve the project’s goals.
