Thane Civic Body Demolishes Nearly 200 Illegal Constructions In Four-Month Drive

September 29, 2025:The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has demolished 198 unauthorised constructions since June this year as part of a sustained crackdown on illegal structures, officials confirmed on Sunday. In addition, unauthorised extensions in 66 other buildings were removed during the drive.

According to a TMC release, action against 264 unauthorised constructions has been taken so far, following directives from the High Court and inspections carried out by ward committee beat inspectors and special vigilance teams in Diva and Mumbra.

Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao reviewed the progress of the campaign on Saturday and instructed officials to remain vigilant. “All systems should stay alert to ensure no illegal construction continues. Cases must be registered immediately under MRTP once the legal process is complete. Accurate information should be gathered through physical inspection and modern technology,” the release quoted Rao as saying.

The civic body has also urged citizens to exercise caution when purchasing property. Warning boards are to be displayed at key locations, and buyers have been advised to confirm that projects are authorised by the City Development Department before making a purchase.

To improve transparency, QR codes have been affixed to all legally approved buildings. By scanning these codes, citizens can directly access construction permission details on their mobile devices.

Between June and September, 50 cases of unauthorised construction were registered across the city, including Diva (11), Mumbra (13), Kalwa (4), Vartak Nagar (8), and Lokmanya Nagar-Savarkar Nagar (7).

Meanwhile, in a separate incident on Sunday, a 150-foot-long, 20-foot-high protective wall at Nilkanth Green society in Manpada collapsed amid heavy rainfall. Several adjoining trees also fell, though no injuries were reported. The TMC disaster management cell has cordoned off the site as a precautionary measure.
