October 3, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to restart the concreting of Mumbai’s roads after a pause of nearly four months due to the monsoon season. Ahead of the rains, the civic body had excavated around 525 km of roads, accounting for 25 per cent of the city’s total 2,050 km road network.
A total budget of Rs 17,733 crore has been allocated to concretise 700 km of roads across Mumbai. Civic officials said that with September over, manpower and machinery will be mobilised from next week once the festive season concludes.
The BMC plans to begin work on 1,350 roads spanning a total of 365.44 km. These have been categorised into two groups. The first includes 574 partially completed roads covering 156.74 km, which will be prioritised for completion. “Our target for road concreting was 31 May, but early monsoon rains delayed work. Roads that were dug up were temporarily covered with asphalt, and these will now be concreted first,” said a civic official.
The second category comprises 776 entirely new roads spanning 208.7 km. Upgradation works on these roads will begin from scratch, with a completion target set for early 2027. Officials noted that a substantial stretch is expected to be completed before the 2026 monsoon.
The project, announced in 2022 by then Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, had aimed for completion by early 2025. It is being executed in two phases: the first phase covers 700 roads (approx. 324 km), while the second phase involves 1,421 roads (approx. 377 km). Progress currently stands at 49%, with 64% of phase-one roads and 37% of phase-two roads completed.
Officials acknowledged challenges, including seasonal rains and local protests, which can significantly delay work. Despite these hurdles, the BMC is determined to accelerate progress as the city enters the post-monsoon construction season.
