Mumbai To Emerge As Global Maritime Hub As India Charts Rs 8 Trillion Investment Vision By 2047

October 16, 2025: Mumbai is poised to become a global hub for maritime innovation, investment, and collaboration as the city prepares to host the India Maritime Week (IMW) 2025 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre. The mega event will bring together global maritime leaders, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to deliver the keynote address at the Global Maritime CEO Forum.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, reviewed preparations for IMW 2025 alongside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and Minister of Ports Development Nitesh Narayan Rane during a high-level meeting at Mantralaya. The review focused on venue readiness, logistics, security, and stakeholder coordination to ensure seamless execution.

Speaking after the meeting, Sonowal said, “Under the dynamic leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi ji, we are working to transform our ports, shipping, and logistics ecosystem into one that is resilient, sustainable, and future-ready. This opens vast avenues for international collaboration, including a 1 trillion US dollar maritime investment roadmap. IMW 2025 will be a platform where ideas can translate into projects and commitments into partnerships.”

Outlining India’s long-term vision, he added, “India is charting a course toward global leadership in the maritime sector by 2047 with planned investments of Rs 8 trillion and the creation of 1.5 crore jobs. Our Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision is anchored in prosperity, sustainability, and pride in our maritime heritage.”

India’s maritime sector has already seen significant progress—cargo movement on inland waterways has grown eightfold since 2014, port turnaround times have fallen by 60%, and over Rs 5.5 lakh crore in Sagarmala projects are reshaping coastal logistics. Major states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, along with leading players such as Adani Ports, Cochin Shipyard, and Paradip Port Authority, are expected to participate in IMW 2025.
