Mumbai Sees Spate Of Building Mishaps: Two Hurt In Chira Bazaar, Fire In Malad Contained

October 23, 2025: Two elderly residents were injured on Wednesday morning after a section of a residential building collapsed in South Mumbai’s Chira Bazaar area, officials said. The incident occurred around 6:23 am at the Aatmaram Building on JSS Road, a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA)-owned structure.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a portion of the first-floor kitchen in room number 11 gave way and fell to the ground floor. Emergency teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), local police, MHADA, 108 Ambulance services, and ward staff were promptly dispatched to the scene.

Two residents sustained injuries in the collapse. Thakkarji Gala, 75, suffered minor injuries but declined hospitalisation, while 71-year-old Gunvanti Gala was admitted to Bhatia Hospital, where she is in stable condition, according to the ‘C’ Ward Control Room. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse and secured the site to prevent further mishaps.

In a separate incident, a portion of the Banushala Building, a ground-plus-one structure located on Sakhali Street in Madanpura, Byculla West, collapsed around 12:49 pm the same day. The Mumbai Fire Brigade declared a Level-I emergency at 1:00 pm to ensure swift action. Officials confirmed that there were no injuries, and the building is being examined for structural safety.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out early Wednesday morning in Bhumi Classic, a seven-storey residential building near Inorbit Mall in Malad West. The blaze, reported at 5:06 am, spread to several closed flats on the sixth and seventh floors. Firefighters brought it under control after two hours.

A resident, Shubham Agotaria, 24, sustained a hand injury, while a senior fire officer was also injured during the operation. Both were treated and are in stable condition. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
