October 28, 2025: At the recently concluded Rahsta Expo, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), unveiled an ambitious vision to position the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as a USD 1 trillion economy by 2047. Highlighting the central role of infrastructure, Dr. Mukherjee remarked that “roads represent far more than physical infrastructure,” describing them as “the backbone of growth with an immense multiplier effect.”
He outlined how landmark projects — including the Mumbai Coastal Road, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, the expanding Mumbai Metro network, and the ‘Mumbai in Minutes’ initiative — are redefining connectivity across the region. According to him, MMRDA is creating an integrated transport ecosystem that seamlessly connects roads, metros, and ring roads to form a cohesive mobility network.
Dr. Mukherjee also pointed to upcoming transformative developments such as the Vadhavan Port and the larger Third Mumbai initiative, which are expected to decentralise growth and strengthen the region’s economic resilience. He noted that MMRDA’s master plan, comprising 31 strategic projects, is designed to drive holistic and sustainable growth.
Emphasising collaboration as a cornerstone of progress, Dr. Mukherjee said the success of these mega initiatives depends on “contractors, suppliers, and overall operational efficiency” to ensure timely delivery. “As Mumbai transitions from its historic identity into a neo-urban global city, every stakeholder must contribute meaningfully to this developmental journey,” he added.
The Rahsta Expo served as a strategic platform for MMRDA to showcase its long-term roadmap focused on innovation, integration, and collaboration. With several mega projects progressing simultaneously and public-private partnerships playing a vital role, Mumbai’s evolution into a future-ready global metropolis continues to accelerate.
