November 07, 2025: In a major step toward improving traffic flow in the Thane district, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the construction of a Rs 168-crore, four-lane flyover at Mothagaon (Retibandar) in Dombivli. The project aims to eliminate the persistent traffic snarls caused by the existing level crossing on the Diva–Vasai railway line, which has long hindered daily commuters between Dombivli and Thane.
The current level crossing at Mothagaon has been a significant bottleneck, particularly for vehicles heading toward the Mankoli flyover and other major arterial routes. Frequent train crossings result in prolonged closures, causing heavy vehicular congestion and frustration among commuters. The new flyover, designed as a four-lane structure, promises to bring lasting relief to the region’s growing traffic challenges.
According to a report by Loksatta, the project’s estimated cost of ₹168 crore includes around Rs 30 crore for land acquisition and approximately Rs 138 crore for approach road development and rehabilitation efforts. The plan also involves resettling nearly 600 affected residents.
Local civic officials highlighted that the decision to expand the design from two lanes to four was influenced by persistent demands from residents and elected representatives, who stressed the need to account for future traffic growth. Once completed, the flyover is expected to significantly cut travel time, decongest the Retibandar–Mankoli corridor, and enhance connectivity to Thane, Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai.
Residents have welcomed the approval, viewing it as a long-awaited solution to years of inconvenience caused by the railway gate delays. The civic administration is now awaiting administrative sanction for fund release, following which construction is expected to begin in the coming months. Officials underscored that the timely execution and smooth rehabilitation of displaced families will be crucial for the project’s success.
