Worli’s Redeveloped BDD Chawl Towers Face Water Outages And Maintenance Woes Months After Handover

November 08, 2025: Barely three months after residents shifted into the newly redeveloped BDD Chawl towers in Worli, complaints are mounting over poor construction, lack of maintenance, and basic service failures. On Thursday, a major water outage exposed the extent of neglect, leaving residents without a supply for nearly four hours.

“There was no contractor staff present to attend to basic issues. From 12 pm to 4 pm, our taps ran dry,” said resident Bajrang Kale from D-Wing. “The water stoppage was the tipping point. We have written to Mhada demanding immediate intervention. We were told this redevelopment would improve our living conditions, but we are constantly struggling.”

Residents allege that soon after occupation, issues such as seepage, wall cracks, and faulty electrical fittings became evident. Gajanan Shirkar, 65, who works in interiors, said, “There are leaks in many flats. The electrical fittings are poor; in some cases, the electricity meters have burned. The tiling is uneven and hollow in many places. These are basic quality failures.”

Maintenance has also emerged as a serious concern. Residents claim there is just one housekeeping worker for two towers, each spanning 40 floors. “How can one person manage 40 floors every day? She got exhausted and stopped coming because she was also not being paid properly,” said Ganesh Shinde, 58.

Unclean corridors, unremoved debris, non-functional lift ventilation fans, a lack of CCTV cameras, and pest infestation have compounded residents’ frustration. Many have also been unable to set up a society office due to a lack of space.

When contacted, Milind Borikar, Chief Officer, MHADA’s Mumbai Board, said, “We have already instructed the team to resolve the issues on priority. A meeting with residents has been scheduled for the coming week.”
